Active Shutter Removal Pre LCI
Hey all. Ive got a 2020 m850 and Im planning on installing a double slat grill on it. Id like to remove the active shutter so that the grill is open completely behind it. I saw one post where a guy had multiple check engine lights after doing it. Has anyone found a fix to this? Thanks in advance,

Aesthetics. The m8's and newere m850's dont have them. Its completely open and it looks much nicer when you can see straight through the grill. I firsgt noticed an m850 at the dealership without the shutters and I fell in love.

Presumably you are aware of the function it serves?

No. I assumed it was to cool off the motor when it got hot. But I figured it being open 100% of the time would be fine. After all they have some 8 series at the dealer with them not in place. Excuse my ignorance, but is it important? And if so why do some 8's have them and others dont?

Yes it cools off the motor when it gets hot BUT it also keeps it from getting too cool.
It’s a common misconception that ‘a cool motor’ is a good thing…while it is certainly better than a hot motor every engine is designed to run at a particular temperature. If nothing else your engine will take a lot longer to warm up from a cold start. I’m no expert but my personal view is that BMW engineers know a bit more than me and put the active shutter in for a reason. I will stand corrected but it is my belief from reading this forum that the shutter is closed most of the time. |

Active shutter are a bit miss understood in general. Many brands have them on different models. Shudders close more often when at speed to present better aerodynamics giving a higher fuel milage. That is the overall point of active shudders is to gain MPG. As for cooling or heating it will have zero impact since the thermostat is what keeps the engine at optimal operating temps. There is a disclaimer to that if you are living in zub zero temps, like the areas where you see Semi's block off half there rads to keep the heat up. lol If at idle or sitting in traffic the shudders are open and only during a start up they will be closed at idle or parked. My fear with a HOTVEE is are they staying open long enough after you shut down the engine as in not to coke the oil in the turbos. lol
