Leather Pulling Up - Check Your Vehicles

Hi all,

It's been quite a while since I've been on the forum, hope everyone here has been well .

When retrieving something from the backseat today I noticed the leather under the rear psngr quarter window is lifting (see pic), the driver's side is also doing it albeit ever so slightly.

My warranty just expired 12/26/23 and I went with BMW Platinum. I've contacted my dealer and await their response, as this is clearly a defect and not a wear/tear issue. The M850 only has 5759 miles on it (over 4 years) and is always garaged, so I can't imagine BMW not covering this.

Has anyone had this issue/any suggestions?

Thanks all.

Nothing like this on my end... Always a worry for me living in AZ and with the vert as well. That looks like the glue is not holding up well but also might be a somewhat simple fix too.

Thx gents.
This car rarely even sees the light of day, so heat/UV not the issue here and is a defect in glue application. My guess, when the part is removed/examined there will be little glue under that area.

I have always wondered if this sort of thing, which is not rare in that location or on door tops in several BMW models, has to do with tint being installed. Installers use a lot of soapy liquid that I'm guessing some installers let saturate the leather.

Just checked my coupe and thankfully no issues but thanks for the call out. I do have tint darker on the rear window but not limo dark (hey I want some visibility) but passenger doors and the small side windows for the back seat are tinted to the legal darkness here in AZ for the front driver/passenger windows. Could have went darker on the little backseat fixed windows but wanted a unirormed look.

Glad to hear no else thus far. Since mine’s a ‘19 albeit one of the last produced, I’m guessing it might be limited to them.

Btw my dealer has about 14 new 8 series on the lot from what I saw.

What's the build date on your 2019? Haven't been to my dealer since November when I had the M850i's last warranty service done and they had 3 8-series and all 840i's (1 vert and 2 GCs).

I picked up a Platinum as well but back in May as the prices were going up. Grabbed a 7yr/75K for a song and a dance. In last November's service the SA fixed the rear window creaking (plastic housing cover right past the roof liner to the window) and the creaking coming from the steering wheel lowering/raising. On the latter my SA told me sometimes that requires the entire mechanism but they fixed it without that. But sadly a few months later it's back.

Will be interesting if they claim wear and tear on that when I take it in next time. However, documented as supposedly fixed under the full factory warranty so guess who will win that battle? 👍

6/19 apparently mine was ordered right before everything switched to 20

They pitched the Fidelity one but I stuck with BMW’s

So the 8’s are going to warm weather dealers right now. Can’t find any on lots here and my local dealer says it will be a couple months at least. Similar story at dealers within a couple hours drive.
