Strong Vibration
Hi, I was coming back home this evening and as I'm passing a car I accelerated from 120 KM to 145-150 and notices a strong vibration in the steering wheel as well as underneath my feet. Could this be a balance issue? I tried it again, the vibration was starting from 125K and above.
When I got home, I did two things, I re-torqued the wheels (which did not need it) and checked the tire thread. I noticed the tires are wearing more on the inside of the tire than the outside. Could the car also need alignment even though it drives pretty solid. Thanks Last edited by Moopai; 09-24-2023 at 06:36 PM.. |

Thanks. I will have to book it for a balance as my next oil change will be around January.

Have the same thing happening to me, took it to service last week and they found a bubble in one of the tires. Getting it replaced this week, but gonna cost around $500. Turns out it’s $100 cheaper at the dealership than the Goodyear shop somehow. Sucks because this is the second tire I’ve had to replace in less than 2000 miles of driving…

I had a decent sized bubble on the inside of my front drivers side tire which was causing a vibration. Replaced the Good Year RF which only had 10k on them with MPS4 one size wider front and rear. The car rides so much better now.

Asymmetric 3’s, but yeah I’ve heard switching them out might be the move. Hopefully if these 4 wear out I will, but if only 1 gets damaged it doesn’t make sense to buy a whole set

Yeah during the oil change so maybe it was discounted since it was already up in the air for them to remove wheels?

Still a sweet deal as even with my SA loyalty a balance for me at BMW North Scottsdale is $100. I've considered $100 at the dealer absolutely dirt cheap but now I know I've been over paying. 😜

Inner side wear (especially on the fronts) is absolutely normal if one can call it that. My first set of P Zeros had to be replaced at about 10K miles due to it although the center and outer had at least another 2K if not more tread life. My SA said it's the camber angle (which was in total spec) that causes it.

Dealer wants $200 to balance the wheels.
The interesting part, yesterday I did not experience any vibration not even at 140+ km/h. This is weird, no idea what the hell is going on? I hate Bridgestone, not sure why BMW is using them... |

It's a rip off. I've done before many wheel balances, they were all done on a Hunter machine for around $65 including taxes. The pandemic got dealers and some shops really greedy... It's like the moron that wants to charge me $900 to fix a simple Carbon Fibre scratch... Brutal!
The thing that pisses me off the most, there is only 18k/km done on these tires and they are down to 6/32 & 5/32 on the front and 5/32 & 4/32 on the back. It's not like the car being tracked to lose this much tread! That why I hate Bridgestones... Last edited by Moopai; 09-26-2023 at 11:26 AM.. |

My stock Bridgestones were crap too… I couldn’t wait to change them, ended up tossing them at only 10k KM because they were already starting to buckle on sharp low speed turns. Got the Conti DWS06 which swerved me very well and now at 50k KM and holding up very well. I also experienced a very high pitched vibration I could only feel on certain speeds/roads in the steering wheel and so after putting the wheels on a Hunter Roadforce determined one front tire has a heavy spot… unfortunately this is the second set of Contis I’ve had with a heavy spot too sharp to balance out so I’ll likely try and set of Michelins next.
I’m paying $200 for a Hunter RF 4 wheel balance out here in Vancouver too.

In a month or so I will install my Michelin winter tires on and next spring I’m replacing the Bridgestones w/ MP4S.
As to the Conti, I’m surprised you’re having that many problems. I’ve had them on my wife’s MDX several times, great tires and no issues. Quote:

However, as compared to the Michelin PS3ZP I had on my 5 series, I'll be switching back to Michelin once these are worn.

Hankooks are good tires but the tread doesn't last long! I had several Ventus in previous years, they ride nice but don't last. Michelin the way to go...
