Can the M8 actually compete with Porsche?
Can the M8 actually compete with Porsche?
I am a huge BMW fan and have been wondering if BMW is finally at the Porsche level. I am not dissing BMW as I own a e31 850CSI myself and have been thinking of something new. I have been considering the BMW m8 but the Porsche 911 is also tingling me.

Speed, agility, comfort, looks, quality? M8 is a big, heavy and very fast GT. So far faster than any 992 at least until their fast models come out. Porsche is a light sports car. Well build, extremely competent, great ride, great PDK, decent resale value. I take the M8 over a Porsche because I am personally bored with the look of that car. Plus we lease as we change cars often and the M8 leases at a fraction of the Porsche. Am satisfied with the quality on the M8 and very pleased with the ride. The only Porsche I am interested in is the Taycan Turbo S |

M8 and 911 are not in the same class of cars. BMW in general does not have any model in 911 class of cars.

Going from a 850CSI to a M8 is night and day. The 850CSI has about the same performance as my outgoing Lexus GS430 and my 2020 M850i blows it away in all aspects. Throw in the M8 and it ups the gap. I'm a huge 911 fan but unfortunately due to my size cannot fit in one. You can't go wrong with either but in some sense you are comparing apples to oranges as the M8/M8C is a hellaciously competent GT and the 911 is a sports car.

BMW doesn't have a 911 equivalent and Porsche does not have a M8 equivalent. |

I've just got a regular m850i - mate you've got to get one. Don't worry about the other brand, especially if you are already an 850 owner. |

Porsches do not attract me at all in terms of the exterior design, 911 series look comical to me for some reason (sorry). Taycan is a bit better, but nothing compared to the astonishing combination of elegance & brutality that you have in a BMW 8 series.
The engineering behind 911s is to be respected, although if you plan to drive them flat-out you need to adjust to this weird mid-rear engine chassis, so you are gaining a special skillset that won't help you with any other car. M8 can compete with Porsches on the track, it will beat most of them besides of the fastest models. i.e. of course GT3/GT2 and 911 Turbo S will be faster. If you want to go faster sacrificing some comfort, I would rather look towards McLaren, then the latest R8 ain't bad. |

I loved waking up to the 911, excited for the drive to the office. I honestly have to say I love waking up and doing the same with the M850i. Electronics in the M850i are second to none. Dazzle headlights (coded), wireless CarPlay, touchscreen, quality of heads up display, charging pad, etc are benchmark. Exhaust on M850i is much better (love the popping and crackling), but “feel” and nimbleness of the Bimmer can never compare to a 911 (nor raw acceleration in case of Turbo S ... although it still makes me smile!). I absolutely despise the new “tactile” buttons and consoles in new model 911, Panamera and Cayennes. Horrible glare off the center console and I hate the look, usability and feel (this is main reason I didn’t go Porsche again). Have a 2019 Bentayga and 2020 G63 in the stable as well and find myself gravitating to the Bimmer (get just as many thumbs ups and comments). The 911 and M850i GC are totally different animals, both very fun to drive! |

Latest genuine GT Porsche had was the 928 GTS 1993 which might be typed as the mental predecessor of the M8. Both are GTs with performance levels at the high end of the sports car scale and have their V8 in front.

No, BMW is not at Porsche level at least when it comes to the 911 or 718. The question of is BMW at Porsche level when it comes to the Panamera however can be answered as that is much closer and easier to debate in my opinion.
The 911 is just too different of a car when it comes to driving. You may be able to get a Carrera and 8er at the same price, however one is a sports car with GT levels of refinement, and the other is just a pure GT car. One weighs over 2 tons, the other can weigh as little as 3300lbs. One is front engined sharing a platform with SUVs and Sedans, the other is rear engined and on a bespoke platform/chassis, not to mention the 911 is more than a foot smaller in length, overall the point is clear. Both are awesome cars but for different purposes which may or may not fit you as a buyer. In my opinion, the two aren't really comparable other than in maybe 0-60 times and price, a Panamera is a much closer competitor, although mainly to the GC. |

Drive them both. Had a 2019 M5 which shares components with M8.... had opt to drive M8 comp for a day. They are great but nothing like 911
BMW doesn't have a competitor to a 911. Comes back to what you want. I have a 992 Carrera S it's very comfortable and feels equally as fast as my M5 did with much better handling. The M5/M8 certainly would be faster 60-120 etc but from the get they feel same. If you review track times etc 992 wins out but again the M8 is a big heavy GT car that does that well. I'm 6'4" there is plenty of room and is comfortable Diff strokes for diff folks, I didn't like how either M5/M8 drive. I wanted a sports car not a GT. I didn't cross shop M8 and 911 they are really nothing alike

BMW is a different brand, it doesn't have to be another Porsche.
Porsche doesn't look like $150k car until you drive it and then you get it. M8 feels more luxurious with more than enough performance for the street. |

Bmw will never become porsche. It's not always about power power power. Porsche is a much better drivers car. This coming from a previous M5/m6 owner.
