Does this mean brake-by-wire is coming now?
I hope not.

I hope the track mode deletes the (currently standard, no cost) frown from BMW Australia when they hear you've actually put your M car on the track like in the promotional material.
All well and good to promote it. Now support it.

Why not just follow the tradition? What all other cars do, a rounded tach at middle? Or a horizontal line tach at the top?

This car looks fantastic. I'm sure the official version will be almost similar if not identical to the leaked photos a few months back- which doesn't bother me one bit. Great looking car. The tech and the giant digital dash is very "Aventador-like" and looks absolutely stunning. The M performance carbon parts and exhaust with a nice drop on this will def be a looker...at 200k
In the market for a sedan though, so the big coupe isn't a fit for me- can't wait for the flood of the barely used M5 competitions to hit the market when this drops.

Why would I want to change brake pedal feel? That's like saying you want a car with variable ratio steering on a track...You never know what you're going to get. Brakes should feel like brakes braking. Not any more or less direct depending on the situation.

Correct. That is what this is. There is no hydraulic brake booster in the car. The new G20 also has this setup as well ( a product specialist showed it to me on the M340 ). Drive by wire throttle. Electric steering. fake engine sound. Electric parking brake. And now .. Drive by wire brakes.. We are being ushered toward the e vehicle |

BMW M8 Debuts New M Modes and Setup System, Including Adjustable Brakes!
The system will first debut on M8 but as we have seen on the pictures will also make its way into soon to be unveiled X5M, X6M and undoubtedly M3.
Since as usual what we have heard so far is only how great the system is and that the new braking system weighs by "impressive" 2 kgs less, let's analyse what we have actually seen or noticed and what it will mean for the driving. The most important thing to notice is that the M xdrive does not require switching off the stability system anymore. You can notice that in the video when they are in the sport setup menu they simply toggle between 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD. On F90 as you remember you would need to go into a very separate menu where 4WD Sport and 2 WD would be greyed out until you switch ESP to MDM or completely off. This change has to do with the introduction of the integrated braking system which finally allows integrating new M xDrive torque driven stability control with old school brake driven stability control (which is required in 2WD mode). What we also notice in the video is that there is no setup anymore for the gear change system. Why? Well, because it actually only made sense when there was a DCT. With the conventional torque converter all we need for the gear is to change as quickly as possible. I guess they kept the functionality on the M5 F90 just for legacy. A separate setup for the brakes I think is simply great especially for those who do not drive their M cars on the track. We also see a new sport oriented display which looks very much like a display from a video game couple of years ago. Which I do not think is a bad thing. It means that finally the car makers caught on with modern computer graphics development. As regards the Mode button which switches off the baby-sitting systems as well as the infotainment system. I think it is more a nice-to-have than a must. You can switch off the baby-sitting by pushing and holding the corresponding button on normal BMW cars. And personally I like hearing music while driving on the track... What are your thoughts? |

I feel like I'll forever remain stuck in the BMW era from 2000-2015... anything prior to that is too rudimentary anything newer has just become too ridiculous.

Such a shame they are being so shy with transposing the 2017 Concept's cockpit graphics... They might make on-the-air updates in the future, but they could easily have used clearer lines, chunkier stripes, some more 3D effect, to make the whole experience more visually striking from the get-go, especially given the infinite possibilities offered by full digital. This car does look promising, but not for more than 150k MSRP. anything beyond that and people will be more drawn to the cars I mentioned, IMO.

M should stand for Motorsport.
Should a race car not be lighter ? Does any race car have such ridiculously counter intuitive dials ? Form should follow function. I can respect and understand the evolution needed but this is a fail. But I appreciate the addition of oil temperature. Hate to say this but look at Porsche and the new 911 with a very nice central rev counter dial with an old fashioned needle combined with digital screens... |

I am not suggesting it should be as nimble as an M2, but it should not be cruiser either...who knows where it will end up on that spectrum, but I don't think they should call it an M8 unless they've tried to make it the best driving car for its respective segment. I am not sure that the majority of these features/gizmos are in alignment with trying to be the best driving car in the segment...

I'm too slow. You beat me to posting this one. Not only squeal on/off but maybe three levels like other M settings. (Mildly irritating, moderate, school bus squeal).
One more thought...maybe we could also pipe the sound in via the speakers since the cabin is so well insulated? Rant over....I still love my F90.... |

" ...Also new for the M8 is the braking system bundling the brake activation, brake booster, and the braking control functions into what BMW refers to as a compact module to shave off about two kilograms (4.4 pounds) compared to a conventional setup. The amount of pressure on the brake pedal necessary to slow the car depends on whether the driver is in the Comfort or Sport mode."
TBT: It's nothing new to racing, DTM or track cars. Even tho it's sooooo analog... Take Linder in Group A DTM for instance some 30 plus years ago... ( pics ) In fact I think it's really cool they're doing this... I wish it were an option in my car now.

Here are my thoughts on pricing. The M760i starts at $157,700 before D&H while the M850i starts at $111,900 again before D&H with the Convertible $10k more. Even though they are not real M cars it should give us a basis of pricing between the two models. The M8 is supposed to be BMW's new flagship model but it doesn't have the expensive V12 that the M760i has. Therefore I think the non GC, Convertible and non competition models should be around $140k. And with full options this car could reach $150k easily.
