The exhaust button only is good for burbles. They are tuned into the ECU for the different driving profiles. The valves are never truly fully open even with that on. They open and close to the tune of your throttle response.

The easiest way I have seen is to take the fuse out. Unplugging the valves will throw a CEL. You would need to have a dummy plug for it.

You could also buy a valve controller. This is another option. Not sure if they make an exhaust without valves for the X5M and I know they do not with the M850i or M8.

Yeah this is super super old post, they used to work that way. Now its a variable opening rate with software. Mine are unplugged no CEL either so it might depend on what year you are referring too due to software updates much of this is actually out of date.
