Slow price depreciation for the 8 series?

Though I have been originally looking for a nice 6-series GC, their limited availability and relative age are leading me to check the new 8-series GC.

However, I have the impression that prices for used 840/850s are persistently high despite being now almost five years in the market (around USD 80,000 here in Europe). Am I just exaggerating or is this due to low volumes for such a high-end car?

The first owner of my 840GC took a £46k hit in just under two years.

I paid just over £50k for it and expect it to depreciate significantly but not overly bothered as I plan to keep it for at least four years (it’ll only have maybe 50,000 miles on it at that point) …or until an electric option becomes viable here in the UK.

Production/Sales started in late 2018, so a touch under 4 years

Prolly due to the pandemic and the fact 8s have a drop in msrp(at least in US)…?
For instance used M8s didn't depreciate much comparing to current msrp, you see nice equipped 2020/21 GCs starting around 110-120k while new ones after price drop start at 134k

Correct and at that time M850i only (technically a 2019). The 2020s brought the 840i along with the almighty M8s and the GC variants. 👍

That changes things indeed; tks for this clarification (I am currently checking a 840d).

Yes and the 840d has never been offered in the NA market so it's pricing and depreciation will likely be solely dependent in your market. Good luck with the search as all of the 8-series are great cars.

I don’t agree about retaining value. I have a 5k mile loaded M850i convertible, and I was just offered $30k less than msrp as a trade value.

That’s pretty typical of dealers….I’d advertise it myself first…

Yep, they will low-ball you on a trade in value as at the end of the day whether they keep it and sell it on the lot or wholesale it they want a margin on it either way.

I had the the same experience, but my offer was almost $40k Cdn less than what I paid for it 4 weeks ago. I won't go into the details of why I tried to get out of the car, but the whole ordeal has been a miserable experience.

Hi All,

I am still on the lookout for a 8-series and have recently found a 840d with good specs for a more reasonable price.

My quick question: are 8-series diesels as noisy as the usual diesels out there? Or is the engine/exhaust note more subdued compared to other cars? I only have diesels at home and love their frugality as well as less complex engines.
Tks!

I wouldn't get the diesel if you don't do much mileage. Go for the 840i instead.

Unfortunately I do drive a lot, as my almost daily work commute is around 150km.

So noise-wise, would a 840d be ok?
