Oil sludging?

Just had an oil service done and was told by the service advisor they found the oil in the engine to be unusually thick and have sent a report to BMW - I should have asked for more information and left the dealership confused and concerned! Can anyone advise what would cause this and what i'm to expect? Should I be looking to sell even though I love the car?

Was this the first service of the vehicle or is your car overdue for service?

Where was the previous oil change done? I wonder if they might have substituted a cheaper oil that didn't have the correct BMW LL01 rating. Lab analysis could confirm this.

All work has been carried out at the dealership. I'm going back on monday to get more info and see what the implications are. Maybe time to get a quote for a new 335 although as ive said before i'm still more than happy with the 330.

I'll be interested to hear what they say. I am really surprised they brought up this topic, since it seems you have maintained the car in a reasonably way. It makes me wonder if they have some other motive in approaching you with this information. Did they already suggest it was a good time to trade it in on a new one?

I'm not an expert, but if it was me I would get the oil changed more regularly in future to hopefully avoid any serious consequences from the reported issue. If your car was an older vehicle with much over 100,000 km on the clock I'd be a bit concerned. Unless your car has an oil consumption problem I probably wouldn't panic about it.
