Yes, there is a legitimate reason for it. Swan Neck mounted wings produce more overall downforce than a standard mount wing.

What most people don't know is that the MOST important part of a rear wing is actually the underside of the wing, so by removing the mounting uprights the underside stays clean and more efficient. Swan neck mounted pedestals prevent flow separation which is usually found in bottom mounted pedestals, so this is all to maximize the efficiency of the wing to maximize downforce.

Swan Neck wings also typically allow for a greater Angle of Attack (AOA), before the wing stalls out. APR Performance makes some awesome Swan Neck Mounted wings just in case anyone is looking for one
