Interesting, the first BMW charger I purchased and picked up at my 1 year was the wrong one and similar to yours, and that one worked fine, but it doesn't have the eight lights to illustrate the 8 steps, but just 2, so I'd have no way of knowing it worked the same way as the 8. Here's the two, first one is what I have now:
