I would seriously consider taking route 221 at least part of the way. Blue Ridge Parkway is a nice drive with lots of scenic overlooks but not really a drivers road. The Blowing Rock Parkway just south of that is a MUCH better driving road and probably less traffic. You dont have the views but you get the curves.
