The BMW M8 could have more than 600 horsepower

And if that number's not big enough, a forthcoming Competition model could have even more

It’s no surprise BMW is building an M version of its 8 Series, even releasing the M8 GTE long before the production base model just so it could go racing.

But now we’re learning a little bit more about the M8 production car and its powertrain.

The M8 will use the same engine as the new M5, which means at least 600 horsepower from the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 should be on tap.

In the M5, that mill propels the car to highway speeds in a ridiculous 3.1 seconds from a standstill. BMW hasn’t said much, but we can guess the M8 will lose some weight, gain some rigidity, have a tuned suspension, and put the centre of gravity down low.

Keeping it all on the road is a sophisticated AWD system that can be switched to rear-wheel-drive and send 100 percent of the power to the back for some slidey-crashy action.

BMW now seems keen to offer a little more than what the “regular” M versions come with, continuously adding “Competition” models to its lineup with even more power and handling upgrades. Just as the M5 received a Competition model with 625 horsepower, the M8 is likely to get an even further hotted-up variant.

The M8 has no release date, and it’s going to be expensive.
