Compare: when the E36 came out in Dec 1990, even with that car's early build problems - at the time, it was known as the "Hubble" - the wait list rapidly grew to six months and there were no discounts, not even floor mats.
That's because of build constraints -- buyers are being forced to have options they may not want, so those options are being credited. For example, when the new X5 came out, you couldn't get Sensatec interior, everything had leather. So there was a $1450 leather credit, which went away once you could get Sensatec. In reality most people want leather on that car, so if you were lucky enough to get an early one, you saved $1450 versus the same X5 today. Instead of complaining about those option credits, take advantage of them. They won't be there once the production constraints are lifted, and the same car will cost more.
