The B58 has 6 cylinders in-line, that's why it's a more steady engine (talking about the moment of inertia) and it's not as heavy as the N63xx. Also the N63xx, as you know, has not so perfect history and reputation (turbocharger between cylinder's heads and that stuff...).
In general: the B58 - interesting, cost-effective and safe one, the N63xx still doesn't inspire trust, even after restyling.

I hadn't really considered any of the factors you describe, so I am wondering how many purchase use-cases they would apply to.

Purely from a personal perspective, (and my previous ignorance about the comparisons you make), I'd rather have the V8 performance, and as I don't plan to have the car for more than 3 years (it is leased), reliability is a non-issue. Applying these criteria, does the straight-6 offer anything better than the V8, other than affordability?
