I have had quite a few FSI engined cars few the last few years, there is currently two GTI Golfs and last year I changed my S5 for the M3 and almost all have covered between 9000~23000miles with none of them ever suffering any problems due to carbon deposits or in fact anything remotely connected to the engine at all.

Maybe it's a rare problem that's multiplied by the freedom of the Internet, after all the lag caused with the M-DCT isn't the worst thing in the world but this forums has pages and pages relating to the subject. Things always need to be put into perspective.
