I can understand the slightly quicker descent on the dead lift. Although I don't do it, some of my friends do (...and it still annoys me. LOL!). With the DB's, once I'm done with a set, I bring my knees to the dumbbells and use the weight to stand me up. Then I just set them down. Dropping them would pose too much risk to my shoulders.
