IMO, They aren't running the Cadillac brand just for the fun of it
Wayne Taylor Racing won 24hr Daytona, not Cadillac. It is a customer program, not factory. The Cadillac DPi that won Daytona is actually a Dallara DPi with mild Cadillac branded styling. The V8 in use is really just a Chevy 6.2L built by ECR. DPi isn't even allowed to run at Le Mans.

Cadillac is represented in Pirelli World Challenge with the ATS-V.R and now in IMSA with new DPi program. GM racing the Cadillac brand is nothing new(most recently racing in PWC for over decade), so I wouldn't use that as any sign for the future. Corvette Racing will remain GM's only full fledged factory racing team. The next Corvette(C8) will be mid-engine and they will continue the tradition of racing the Corvette brand in IMSA GTLM and make the trip to 24hr Le Mans. The dominance of the mid-engine Ford GT platform has shown how a well a car with a small frontal area does on the long straights of Le Mans. The team has to be licking their chops to get their hands on a mid-engine platform. I am sure they are in on the development.

Plus the Cadillac halo car rumors are old and have pretty much all died down. Everyone is calling the new mule a C8 Corvette. If you look closely you can see the C8 sharing the C7 roof, windshield, side windows, mirrors. This lends to the rumors of Chevy producing the C8 concurrently with the final years of front engine C7.
