I'd go mediocre at best on the Merc trans; it's not as smooth as a PDK on the one end and lacks the snappy shipping on the other. Could be car specific though; I've got a porker tuned for comfort. Still, a dual-clutch should not be besting an auto at one of it's best potential attributes; smooth, comfortable, shifts.
It isn't just the tuning though, the box has some problems like what's usually described as a thunk, bang, or something similar at low speeds in certain situations. This is most often seen on steeper hills with a downshift from any gear or when at a standing start and the transmission decides to shift down from 2nd to 1st. The latter happens a fair bit where you've set off but for some reason you need to goose it and you get an abrupt, clunky, shift.
I've had the ZF in various iterations in a number of cars and I'd rate it well above what's in mine now.
