Not exactly. The quote was in comparison to the 911 GTE/LM/RSR using a reversed engine and transaxle layout while remaining within the rules. Context is important.

The torque tube is wider than the standard driveshaft though, I'm hoping this won't mean the petrol tank is small - I'd like to see 80 litres minimum for a decent touring range.

Regardless of the layout, the ZF 8HPTU3 is what's fitted, just as it is in the F90. While the ZF 8_P Family is offered in a transaxle configuration, it has not been combined with AWD. The M8 road car, which is AWD, would require a layout much like the R35 GT-R.
