There are lots of great rounds out there, but as I have said a number of times they aren't worth a shit if you don't hit centre mass. Also getting the rounds down range fast is critical. I also agree wit Rob "Cyborg" Leatham.
Always shoot as fast as you can shoot accurately. The problem is that most people shoot too fast.
For my money "The Test" is a good tool to judge where you are. If you can shoot "The Test" cold no warm up in under 10 seconds clean you are pretty good with a pistol IMHO.
