We're on our 2nd Forester, and our next car will be another Forester or an Outback. I think the X1 is too small for what it is, but the 2011 X3 is a good alternative. If you don't mind the more expensive maintenance, go for it, but I would rather get the Outback honestly. We take our Subaru up to Big Bear every year, several times while it was snowing. Solid as a rock.
