We spent $5.5k on the Tempur-Pedic Breeze Cal-King exactly 2 years ago.
Before that, we had been using those cheap mattress around $350 for years (changed a new one every 3-4 years).
Our sleep quality has gone up and we have less body aches waking up.

When I was 20 I could sleep on bare dirt using my arm as a pillow.
Several decades and back and shoulder surgeries later, I need a mattress that offers some support. It's taken some of the fun out of traveling; you never know what you're going to find, irrespective of how much you're paying to stay somewhere. If I land somewhere with a shitty mattress, I get less fun out of being there.
