For me, it looks like a more luxurious and upgraded version of the M6 coupe. When BMW pulled the plug on the M6 was because it knew that the M6 would be a direct competitor for the M8 for $30K less! So it eliminated one for the survival of the new M8.
Given a choice, there is no doubt I would buy the M6 coupe. Look below for side view compare. (Not to scale but close)
