I chose the USBC in the center console and a 2TB SSD as the 40GB available for the Music Collection on the internal HDD of my 2020 M850i is not big enough for my FLAC high resolution audio collection. As per Ozzie8, the SSD fully integrates into iDrive 7 just like the Music Collection so you can browse by artist, album, etc. In fact voice commands via the assistant will play albums via hands free requests and the gesture controls to skip tracks work as well.
There's an older thread on the forum recommending compatible SSD drives to point you in the right direction. I'm on mobile at the moment or I'd search it for you.
