It is indeed an interesting marketing strategy, but as others have pointed out, BMW's entry level models still have more power than the entry level Porsche option.

BMW also lacks a second six cylinder option with more than 400hp like Mercedes and Audi have. However, on the flip side, those competitors do not offer a two-tiered V8 lineup. If you want a V8, you have to spring for the flagship 600hp+ model from AMG or Audi Sport.

Porsche has the most options with two V6 tiers and now three V8 tiers (BMW technically has three V8 tiers at their disposal too, but the lowest one is available for the X5 and X7 only).
