Sad but true. Probably because as a driver, it's your natural instinct to manoeuvre the car in such a manner to save yourself from direct impact/harm. Basic human instinct I suppose.
That's exactly it. Also why the second "safest" position for a rear seat passenger in the car is behind the driver. The safest being the middle seat assuming it has a proper shoulder seat belt.
