I didn't clean any glass either. I think you just don't see smudges mostly because of where I was focusing. I did have to manual focus a lot because the glass was making it tough to auto focus. The 2x/4x zoom in live view was really helpful for manual focusing. If there was really dirty glass, I just didn't bother trying to shoot through it.
Good stuff. I usually only take my monopod, so that's good to know. (I'm pleased that people don't usually freak out over the monopod, but go crazy when they see a tripod, extended or collapsed).

How close was the front of the lens to the glass?
