Actually if your M8 has carpet lights than I'm guessing perhaps a model thing. When people first mentioned them (there's an old thread back in 2019) I had no clue what they were as the 2017 X5 did not have them. So when my 2020 M850i didn't have them I didn't even think twice as I had no clue they existed.
So either that put them on the M8 only in the US or they added them after 2020 (2022?). Or to your point if added for 2022 on the 8-series than a regional thing. 👍 The 2024 X5 has them so at least now I'm part of the carpet light club.
