I am looking at getting either a 220i or 228i both with the N20 Engine.

Over here in the UK you can get a lot more optional extras for your money when it comes to 220i v 228i on the used card market.

My question is if i get a 220i with the 135 kW (181 hp) / 270 N⋅m (199 lbft) version of the N20 is it possible to upgrade the power to that of the 228i which has 180 kW (241 hp) / 350 Nm (258 lbft) ?

If it is possible... would a computer nerd like me be able to do it? or does it involved changing something mechanical like the turbo?

Thanks!

A JB4 should get you around +80whp on a 220i N20, so you get more power than the 228i in stock form. Email the JB4 shop in the UK, and they will send you their dyno results.

The installation is simple for someone with a little bit of technical common sense.

I have this setup on my 220i, the results are very real. The above numbers have been verified by a couple of independent sources, but some people may say that a tuned 220i will not drive as well as a stock 228i - this is up to you. Personally, I think that a 220i + £700 for a JB4 with 260whp is super value for money.

Check out this threads for more details:

The above thread talks about the 320i, not 220i, but they both have the same drivetrain.

It's worth noting that the 220i N20 engine has different pistons to a 228i N20 engine - the former runs a compression ration of 11:1, and the latter runs 10:1. You have to adjust for this when comparing the two, and this is also why it is not possible to upgrade a 220i to be a 228i with software only.

I have no affiliation with Burger Motorsports, but the JB4 is really the only sensible option for a 220i, other than an ECU remap. I've tried other piggyback devices and none even come close.

In case you're interested, the guys at Burger Motorsports have apparently tuned the N20 engine to beyond 300hp using more advanced modifications like WMI, etc. that the JB4 supports.

Hope this helps, and best of luck.
