Updated 7/11/17:

New video has emerged of the 8 Series Coupe on the Nurburgring.

Updated 4/3/17:

First video of the 8 Series Coupe testing on the Nurburgring, giving us a good listen at its thundering sound (likely the 850i model).

Updated 3/28/17:

The 8 Series Coupe has hit the Nurburgring for the first time. Please see gallery below.

Updated 1/17/17:

Verdict is still out whether this is the next gen 6 Series or a return of the 8 Series, but whatever it is it's big and sleek. Prototype coupes and convertibles were just caught undergoing cold climate testing. Updated with video:

Updated 11/3/16 with newest photos.

Here it is, the next generation BMW 6 Series. Or, is it the 8 Series?

There's some conflicting speculation regarding the future (or lack thereof) for the 6 Series Coupe. A recent report claims that the 6 Series coupe will be moved upmarket and renamed the 8 Series Coupe to do battle with Mercedes' S-Class Coupe, while others say that the 6 Series Coupe will live on. BMW insider, Scott26, claims that there will be both a 6 Series and 8 Series coupe.

Whatever badge it eventually wears, it's looking long and sleek, with design overtones from BMW's Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept.

Looks nice!

The back and profile almost make it look Aston Martin-y? Maybe even a subtle Wraith influence? Lol

Low and long
Very nice

Is it supposed to be a 911 competitor? I thought he said Mercedes competitor.

thats a 6 series 100% imo. The 8 series will be a ultra luxury GT, way bigger and longer than this 6er

EDIT: ITS A 8 SERIES

I forget, which one was planned as the 911 competitor, the new 6, or the 8? Either way, I agree. This thing looks heavy af, but who knows with the CFRP bones.

This can't compete with the 911. It is huge! Lines might look nice though for a gt cruiser.

That is the new G30 5 series next to it- well, at least the front left corner of it.

The whole talk of 911 competitor is purely speculation coming from forum members. Not once did BMW mention they wanted to compete against the 911. But most forum members will only hear what they want to hear.

It was speculation for sure, but from auto journalists, not forum members. I'm sure we've stoked the flames a lot though.

Because of the 8er. There is no need for the luxury GT. So the 6er has been repositioned hence the low roofline and shallow glasshouse.
The 8er will be the larger GT Coupe now.

Similar?

Looks really nice. Definitely more a class competitor looking than 911. My bet is that it's the 8 series!

I don't see any pictures of the 8-series. But why is that yacht wearing funny white camo?

Beautiful profile SCOTT26! Hope the final product is as nice. Seems to be a bit smaller than the current 6 series, can you confirm??

So what's the latest on the 6er reposition? Any reason why we couldn't have something mid engined next time? IIRC the 6er sells fractionally compared to 5 so is a niche market, why not a bit more niche.

This is the fourth generation 6er. There never has been a mid-engined 6er.
