So it's basically an M6 by a different name? Other than addressing the nostalgia for the 8 series brand not entirely sure how this will defer from the 6 series line of a year ago.

+1. The car does look good in pics, but as you say, it is incredibly underwhelming in person.

That's the way it looks to me as well. I think they're going to try to gussy up a 6, call it an 8, and charge $20 - $30K more for it. They may have gotten away with it if they maintained the 8 Concept's styling. But it looks like the production version will just be a warmed over current-gen 6 (a two-door G30).

Some things we have learned from the M8 Concept Gran Coupe.
The front of the car i.e. Lights and grille are what we will be introduced to the production 8er. The M8 Aerodyamics if we compare with recent spy shots show the same aggressiveness and outlines, which means it will be very visual and aggressive to look at. At least as the M8. The sculpted integrated spoiler will be completely necessary and can be seen on Coupe prototypes. One year from now and the M8 in production form will be on the same floor in Geneva. The more aggressive Aerodynamic package is a sign of interpreting more performance and individuality into future M models. Distancing them further from the standard M Sport and next level of M Performance. Further Performance of the M8 will be investigated. Until such decision is made, the standard M8 Coupe will be the most expensive BMW at the luxury end of the market. The Gran Coupe will premiere in 2019. The 8 and The M8 will be branded under the Bayerische Motoren Werke branding. And finally it really works when you see it in person.

Renaming the 6 to an 8 for no reason is just ridiculous. It makes sense if the 8 is on the 7 series platform or if it has a substantially different structure compared to the latest 5 series but as far as I can tell (from rumors, so they could easily be wrong) this is still the same formula as the last 6 series. Also, making the hunchback the only 6 series going forward is just a slap in the face. |

Renaming the 6 to the 8 makes as much sense as BMW TEARING UP YEARS OF HISTORY OF M3 and launching the M4. The key here is that neither of these moves " Makes sense" in any way that can be explained... as a matter of fact.. there is absolutely no explanation for any of their model designations right now. The 3 series sedan and the 4 series coupe are related like the old models in that the 3 series is a sedan and the 4 series is a coupe.. but There is no way to relate most of the even numbered vehicles to the odd numbers. The 2 series is not the coupe version of any sedan. The 6 series GT is not related to the 5 series. it's also not a coupe.. which most of the other even numbered vehicles are. The 8 series coupe and GC are not related to the 7 series. BMW has made as much a complete mess of the basic model numbers as they have their engine designations. They started screwing those up with engine numbers not related to actual engine size a decade or more ago. Then they made a mess of the names with the XDRive crap.. at least the new X3 models are simplified etc etc etc. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 03-08-2018 at 02:55 PM.. |

Seen one and sat in it. Black and dark grey ar great colors for it. And the interior is gorgeous. It's far better than the bar of soap SC430. It's a great successor to the SC400. Reviewers rave about the looks and the interior, and so do the Youtubers. The looks are not for everybody. But it does have presence and curb appeal. And the exhaust note is a beast. Although, I do think even for the GT class, it is underpowered.

For everybody saying it's just an M6/6er are overlooking the fact that the name change also means its sister car if you will is the 7er not the 5er this time around.
So all those attributes and advanced engineering in the 7er will be carried over on The 8er. The M8 will be something truly special, but that is not to overlook the M850i or the standard models inside and out. You will see, feel and drive something that justifies the move further upmarket.

Wow, I had no idea, that’s great news. The M8 has a legitimate chance to be 3800-3900 lbs then. I live not too far away from BMWs carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake, I wonder if they do tours, I’d love to check it out.

Ya, I thought that was a conservative estimate, I just don't want to get my hopes up too much. I'd love to see that TTV8, Xdrive and 3650-3700! Oh really? when did that change, I saw they invested a ton in that place too? Did BMW decide to start build there own plant in house?
