I am literally stuck with my M8 making payments on two very expensive cars and the person taking my lease sold their car assuming mine was theirs two weeks ago… it’s only bmw doing this.

What state is the M8C in that you’re trying to buy? I’m in a very similar situation

Oh man…now that’s scary.
I was told, explicitly, that the reservoir issue was not a safety issue. Now it is?
So now what?…for the next 6 months BMW won’t be able to sell used M8s or any other car with an S63 engine? Can that be real?
I pinged my SA again on ETA and will ping again on that specific point of safety. Will update if I learn anything new.

Just got a response from my SA (text): according to him, the reservoir issue is not a safety issue. BMW grounded the cars due to engine failure risk.
My opinion: it makes sense. An engine overheating risks the engine and can be very expensive, but wouldn’t risk the passengers. Meaning, will not cause a sudden acceleration/deceleration, loss of control, etc.
And…no ETA yet.

Any M850i owners know if this is going to apply to our cars as well? Supposedly this is an issue with our cars as well even though it is a different part number.

See an older post. There was a bulletin on 2019/2020 M850i's but never a stop order. Basically it states that the VPCs may have not properly filled the coolant tank. Hit me in mid-2020 but my dealer just topped it off and never an issue since. The N63 and S63 are obviously related but the difference on the latter is why the stop order as the tanks are not the same part as far as I'm aware of.

Well, I’m definitely not driving the car w a new baby if my engine could fail and I’d expect BMW to reimburse me for the monthly payments until it’s fixed and I can drive the car again or get rid of it. This is definitely a safety issue.

Agree with you that driving an unreliable car is a bad idea - baby or no baby.

Do you happen to know if NHTSA has formally called this “expansion reservoir” a safety issue?

Thanks. Unfortunately it looks like a lot of people with the M850i have leaking expansion tanks as well, with the associated engine problems, so I hope the recall includes them too.

I don’t think so, they just told me they are waiting on their response. I escalated to an executive at BMW N.A., they said they think it’ll be 2 more weeks for the part, which is good news, but who knows if that’s accurate.

Wait… you’re saying they are just replacing the part with the same part? What if my car isn’t even leaking and has no issue??

He said there was a problem with the coolant expansion tank and he was waiting for a answer form corporate office. Its been 1 week and still no answer on what they are doing? Is this dealership giving me the run around? I cant see how they dont want to make a $79000 sale.
I dont see a recall for that problem but after reading the forums I see how the coolant expansion chamber leak.
The part is around $170. Why not just change it and make the sale.
The car will still have 6 months left on the warranty. Im getting anxious
and want this BMW !!
I got my part it, got it repaired today!

Got an (unsolicited) update from my SA, yesterday, with a screenshot from their internal system, showing still no remedy.
So something doesn’t jive here.
Or maybe news doesn’t propagate at equal speed to all directions…
