I noticed it has a carbon fiber driveshaft. I'll wonder if they come out with a revised steel one due to emission regulations in a few years...

Now if they could put half that effort into creating a driver's car again. #unimpressed

Stunning, but one thing I don't like. Why does BMW insist on sitting the kidneys higher than the headlights? It gives a piggy-about effect. Most exotic / low-slung sports cars have the grilles positioned below the lights for a more raked and sleeker look. Instead, the elegant, sweeping headlights are vertically interrupted by kidney grilles placed too high upwards, losing the downwards flow of the front end.

That rear however, is spot on. Excellent job by BMW but really dislike the new direction they're going by placing the kidneys so high up, it takes away from the front.

Absolutely great car. The M8 will only share a name with the race car. It will handle like a land yacht.

That's a stunning GTE car, wow, way to go BMW. I love the rear diffuser and rear wing with swan neck mounts, ah NSFW.

GTE/GTLM cars are considerably different from their road going counterparts. For example, this is the current M6 GTLM (equivalent to GTE).

Compared to the road going M6 Coupé.

The overall look and proportions are pretty close, but the GTE/GTLM car will be much wider, and have far more aggressive aero. Outside of the obviously huge wing and front aero, the fender flares on the GTE/GTLM cars are probably the biggest distinction (from a purely body-shape perspective). Interestingly, BMW integrated the flares much better on the M6 GTLM and the upcoming M8 GTE/GTLM than they did on the Z4.

The Z4 almost looked like a kit car by comparison. That's not to say I didn't love it! IMO, the Z4 has a more old-school race car look. The M6 GTLM and M8 GTE follow the trend of smooth integration of racing aero, in an effort to make the cars look more like the street car. Cars like the Z4 remind me of the 3.0 CSL Gr.5 and 320 Turbo Gr.5 race cars.

Z4 GTLM (2013-2015)

320 Turbo Gr.5 (late 1970s)

3.0 CSL Gr.2, Gr.5, TC, IMSA GT (early & mid 1970s)

IMO, nobody does the flares better than Chevrolet did with the C7.R though. This car is so deceptive. When you see it going around the circuit, it looks like a Corvette Z06, but there's just something... different about it. Then you look at it from a tight angle, and OMG the flare! I took this photo at the Rolex 24 in Daytona this year. You can fit a small child in that vent behind the front wheel. It's HUGE, but the flares are integrated soooo well. The C7.R is just pure sex in person. I'm a hardcore BMW fan, but man, there is some seriously awesome kit on the grid at GT races.

I think you may be right. The original post makes a couple references to the "production engine". I'm going to take a guess and say it's based on the S63 and destroked from 4.4 to 4.0 liters.

That's exactly it, yes. The engine specs are in the OP. The race engine (P63B40? I'd guess that's the name of it since M6 GTLM motor is the P63B44) has the same 89mm bore as the production S63 and N63. However, instead of the 88.3mm stroke of those engines, it uses a shorter 80mm stroke which brings displacement down to 4.0L. Note, furthermore, that the specs show a 98mm bore center which is also the same as the S63/N63, and, in fact, has been used consistently for every BMW V8 from the original M60 which was released back in the 1980's.

GTLM uses GTE regs, with some extra IMSA special sauce mixed in, and BMW raced the 4.4L there. AFAIK, the M6 GTLM received an engine waiver to use the 4.4L engine, because the ACO GTE 4.0L turbo/supercharged engine displacement cap has been around for a while.

For example, the displacement issue is mentioned in this TopSpeed article about the M6 GTLM.

https://www.topspeed.com/cars/bmw/20...-ar171374.html
BMW did not go into any detail about the drivetrain for the M6 GTLM, saying only that it carried a “lightly modified version of the V-8 production engine.” This is the same thing that BMW said about GT3 car, although BMW revealed the all-important detail about the engine producing 592 horsepower instead of the production car’s 560. It’s possible that the same will be true of the GTLM car, but there is a small problem with that. GTE regulations cap engine displacement for turbo/supercharged cars at four liters and the production and GT3 versions of the M6 have 4.4-liter engines.

That said, most governing bodies are more interested in power, and it is very possible that so long as BMW keeps it the same as the GT3 car, the IMSA will be willing to give the car a waiver. BMW could also de-stroke the engine to bring displacement down to four liters, but that isn’t the sort of thing that you’d describe as “lightly modified.”
Although, it is mentioned that IMSA may be willing to give a waiver. Given that the M8 GTE will race at Le Mans, the ACO may be less willing to give BMW yet another pass (see also: Z4 GTE) on engine regs.

Even a couple days later I still find that rear diffuser insane. Can't wait to see the car in action.
