What a beautiful design.

Except that front fender; what an awkward looking emblem. Straight out of auto zone.

Unbelievable, but it is. The M8 GTE is 1.5" longer than the M6 GTLM — which never raced in a WEC series, but IMSA uses GTE tech regs, so they're comparable. Oddly enough, the wheelbase is nearly an inch shorter than the M6 GTLM, so this car will have slightly longer overhangs.

I'm really quite surprised that BMW have stuck with such a large car. Thank god for the performance envelope and BoP I'd really love to see BMW field a mid-engine GTE car though.

Even if they can't find a way to bring something like the i8 to IMSA (yeah, yeah, I know: hybrid driveline = no-go), I wish they'd do something more along the size of the Vantage GTE or 911 RSR. Here's a size comparison between the M8 GTE, M6 GTLM, and Vantage GTE.

The M6 GTLM and now the M8 GTE are substantially larger cars.

Wow, It looks similar to M6, but if you look closely, M8 is way more aerodynamically advanced, new engine as well, obviously new chassis and suspension setup, hope it'll show some good results and take BMW back to the top.
P.S. Mirrors and Wheels.

so its basically the same size as the M6, has the similar configuration for engine as the M6, will be competing in the class the M6 did. tell me again why this isnt just a 6?

oh yea... $$$

The 8er will be getting all the same configurations as the outgoing 6er but will command a higher price because its the top number in the lineup (until they do the same thing to the 7er and call it a 9)

Cant wait for the BMW M1260liS Mxdrive iPerformance Shadowline Edition

Wait - the Vantage is almost one foot taller? Really? Is this measurement to the top of the greenhouse? Or is this including the rear wing, and the Vantage just happens to have a significantly higher one?

Yeah, I wondered the same, but pulled the specs directly from the Vantage GTE page, which specifies a height of 1500 mm (no mention of whether this includes the wing).

http://www.astonmartin.com/en/racing...rs/vantage-gte

However, when you look at a profile shot of the AM Vantage GTE, the wing doesn't appear to rise above the greenhouse by much, if any, like they do on the GT3 cars.

View post on imgur.com

The Vantage is extremely broad-sided (as is the M6 :/ ), but I always thought that was an optical illusion due to the short overall length and high waistline. Honestly, height numbers are kind of hard to come by. I wonder how accurate the 1500 mm number is. I feel confident in the length and wheelbase numbers though.

Here's an updated table with the Corvette C7.R included.

The M6 and the M8 aren't sports cars; they're grand tourers. BMW are rather famous for their ability to build sporty coupés that punch above their weight, but these two generations of GT race cars are getting kind of ridiculous when you look at them in the context of the rest of the field. For me, the M6 — and now the M8 — are kind of like the Bentley Continental GT3-R. Yes, they managed to make a race car out of it, but it's a bit like racing a draught horse in the Kentucky Derby.

I feel such a deep longing for a non-hybrid version of the i8, so BMW can homologate a GTE/GTLM car from it, and really bring it to the fight against cars like the 911 RSR and 488 GTE.

So this is the 8er? TBH I don't like it as much as I thought I would. The headlights are too rounded instead of sharp like in the renderings for the production model. Looks pretty weird, but it seems most ppl like it.

Sad that it lost so much in transition. Feel sad already for the Z4. On the other hand, the X7 might even look "drivable".

This is the M8 GTE, which is a race car (not street legal) built for the FIA World Endurance Championship GTE class and the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship GTLM class. The road car won't look much like this. Far, far less aero, much narrower, way less fender flare. Although, the headlights should be very similar to the production units.

That's what I meant. I realize that's a race car.

Ah, sorry. Knee jerk reaction So many times the admins post a race car and everyone chimes in like it's the road car. When you said 8er, I thought you meant the road car.
