BMW Dealer says any mods (including intake or exhaust) voids warranty

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My dealer in NY will not install a Dinan intake or IPE or AC Schnitzer exhaust and told me if I do my VIN will be flagged and I will likely be denied service.

Needless to say, not the news I wanted when calling to have them install the intake to start.

So, likely keeping my 2023 M850 stock.

Anyone else have problems with exhausts. I can almost understand intake, but not banning exhaust upgrades.

Just venting but feel free to make me feel better or worse depending on if you are banned too or have mods galore.

Thanks

P.S. Let me add, also considering IPE exhaust.

Anything that increases HP can void your powertrain warranty. in 1999 I had a pontiac dealership deny me for my WS6 transAM, my only mod ?? : A K&N air filter. Needless to say, I ended up putting in a cheaper than factory Moser 12bolt rear, and then an additional $25,000 in mods followed. Personally, given the outrageous prices of BMW parts, Id never screw with this car.

Habberstad BMW - Huntington NY

Quite honestly, they have been great with the service of 5-6 consecutive BMW’s but just not happy with their position on mods like exhaust.

Sadly that is a hard line any BMW dealership can take. There are many modders on the forum with relationships with their SA which will turn a blind eye on the mods. My only advice is find a SA at a dealership in your area which will do so as well. Beat of luck. 👍

That’s BS. Off the list, surprised about this but there are plenty of other dealerships/options. So …

Ask for that information in writing. Go to lawyer. A warranty Cannot and will not be voided due to aftermarket or replacement parts in the USA. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is the federal law that governs consumer product warranties. Passed by Congress in 1975. There are many many cases related to that act that one can follow on. Just like I did back in the day with Ford the dealer said welp its all void. They cannot remove a warranty that covers a light bulb because you put larger wheels and tires on..... Same with your situation they cannot blanket a warranty void if there one is nothing wrong, two the aftermarket part didn't cause damage, or three just because they want too. You could probably own that car out right in a few months time and about 12k. lol well in NY its probably going to cost you 24k.

Some people just bend over for companies pushing their will. Remember all warranty work the dealer or shop gets paid 50% labor costs it is in their benefit to not accept warranty work. Be free mod what you want, there is always risk when you mod something but the mod has to be the root cause of the failure.

I found another BMW dealer, two towns over, that will not install but will warranty everything but the exhaust if I put an exhaust on.

Going that route. Likely going with AC Schnitzer exhaust and diffuser. I hate the gray wraparound the car has now.

Thanks for the replies so far

Will honor warranty on some items, even if they did not install?

The SA said they would honor everything but exhaust if I have exhaust put in by someone else. Exhaust won’t be warrantied, but all else will.

Can anyone recommend a shop in Long Island, NY to install an AC Schnitzer diffuser and exhaust on my 2023 M850?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Want to start a shit storm go over to the M3 board and mention this garbage from a dealer, where EVERYBODY changes Midpipes and some down pipes……. Those dudes will have an absolute fit. lol

An exhaust being changed out is BS its that simple. It does nothing to the engine etc. There may be more teeth in voiding a warranty if you mess with springs, coilovers, etc but not an exhaust.

So much support from people with NO experience in getting powertrain warranty work performed on a modded car. All Im seeing here is theory. If any of you blow your engine or tranny, Im sure there are processes in place by BMW corporate to look over the car before authorization. Do you honestly believe the corporation WANTS to replace these major components free of charge? Proceed at your own risk. For a lot of you, money is no object, and can afford a $10,000+ repair. Some cant.

I just had a dealer refuse to cover a damaged PDC ultrasonic sensor on my rear bumper. Refused the repair, they wanted an outrageous $1000+ from me. They could have so easily gotten paid by BMW *shrug* I'll do it myself for $50.
